T O P I C R E V I E WRobert PearlmanISS Expedition 42 mission patchThe International Space Station's (ISS) Expedition 42 begins with the scheduled undocking of Soyuz TMA-13M in November 2014. Three new crew members will arrive shortly thereafter on Soyuz TMA-15M.Credit: NASAExpedition 42 will be commanded by NASA astronaut Barry "Butch" Wilmore. His crewmates, all flight engineers, include: Roscosmos cosmonauts Yelena Serova, Alexander Samoukutyaev and Anton Shkaplerov, NASA astronaut Terry Virts and European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti. The rectangular-shaped design portrays the International Space Station orbiting planet Earth with its solar array wings spread wide. Facing the sun with the lower left outboard solar array feathered, the left array portrays a prominent number "4" and the fully deployed arrays on the right form the Roman numeral version of "2," which signifies the two increment crews which, together, comprise the six-member international Expedition "42" crew. The crew and all supporting personnel around the world are also represented by the six stars adorning the sky around the complex.J BlackburnThumbs up!!! The solar arrays forming the number 42 was a great idea. Well done!GoesTo11Yeah, gotta admit it's cute what they did with the solar arrays. nathan.moellerNeat design. I wonder if the solar array shape was at all inspired by this design we submitted in January 2012 - dogcrew5369First thing I thought of was the Expedition 1 patch just more artistic. Nice patch. I do like having the names on the patches.hoorenz quote:Originally posted by nathan.moeller:Neat design. Is this just my mind's eye or does it have anything to do with commander Barry Wilmore being a navy man?KSCartistWhen I first saw this patch, my initial response was "congratulations Nathan, you made it." I was disappointed to learn that wasn't true. Keep trying Nathan, you'll fly yet.Hart Sastrowardoyo quote:Originally posted by QuiGon Grin:The first thing that I saw in this patch is how much the main body of the ISS looks like an aircraft carrier. Maybe someone's a fan of Robotech: Macross... QuiGon GrinYou're right. Queue the Minmei. Actually I would prefer Yellow Dancer as Minmei was always too "popy" for me. Robert PearlmanCourtesy AB Emblem, here is an early look at the embroidered Expedition 42 patch, as approved by NASA. AB Emblem does not plan to offer this patch for sale until closer to the launch in 2014. Until then, this patch will not be in production except for the orders directly from NASA. Kevin T. RandallI have just acquired some AB Emblem ISS Expedition 42 patches with a thick silver threaded merrowed edge, instead of the normal (up to now) thin silver laser cut edge (as can be seen above). They have the same AB Emblem product number 212626, but they have the date codes 01/1520, and 04/1520.hoorenzInteresting! Thank you.Kevin T. RandallI have now come across another product design number (or error number) used on the AB Emblem ISS-42 patches. It is 216626 and is found on patches with both types of border (thin silver laser cut edge, and thick silver merrowed edge border). All so far are USA made and have date code 09/1420. The other product design number used is 212626 which I have also found with date code 09/1420, (laser cut edge).Kevin T. RandallYet another a third product design number has been found on this ISS-42 patch, (with a laser cut edge border). It is 205160 Made In USA /061420 date code.
